How can you tell if a 1964 Impala had a 283 or 327?

The engines are REALLY close.....you can do it one of two ways.......one by the numbers on the back of the block or
pull the heads...........

if the car is somewhat unmolested, look at the fender badges..

283 had the "V" emblem
327 had the "V", and the crossed flags
409 had the "V", the crossed flags, and the numbers "409"

The higher HP 283 would have had the "V" emblem and a "283" emblem above the "V".
