Stick with the TH350, for several reasons. They're excellent transmissions, and you can build them to suit just about any horsepower level. They're lighter than a TH400, and rob less power, so ultimately you'll get better gas mileage. Also, you already know it will bold right up, so you won't have to change your driveshaft. ;)

Cheers,
Jeff

 THAT IS TRUE A TH350 IS BETTER THAN A TH400 AND IF YOU GET IT BUILT RIGHT IT SHOULD LAST A LONG TIME

I was told the oppsite from my tranny guy, I had a 350 rebuilt for my 68 because I though I had a powerglide. When I got the car to the shop He told me that I had a 400 and I should have it rebuilt and keep it because it was a better trans.

Here are some common tranmission gear ratios:

Transmission
Model First Second Third Fourth Reverse
Rear Wheel Drive:
TH-180C (3L30) 2.400 1.479 1.000 --- 2.000
TH-200-4R 2.741 1.568 1.000 0.674 2.067
TH-300 (Jetaway)
TH-350 2.52 1.52 1.00 ---
TH-400 (3L80) 2.482 1.482 1.000 --- 2.077
TH-700-R4 (4L60) 3.059 1.625 1.000 0.696 2.294
4L30-E 2.400 1.479 1.000 0.723 2.000
4L30-E Optional 2.860 1.620 1.000 0.723 2.000
4L60-E 3.059 1.625 1.000 0.696 2.294
4L80-E 2.482 1.482 1.000 0.750 2.077

1) the 350 weighs less.
2) the 350 has a slightly lower first gear (2.52 vs 2.48).
3) and finally the supposed HP loss difference.

th400s have the advantage for big blocks/big cars but a th350 can be built strong enough for basically anything... unless youre building a drag strip car with 600 + ft/lbs of torque

Plus 400s do take less power to run

go with the 400 if you have the money!! what car is it for? if its for that big ass chevy you bought i would go with the 400 thats a heavy ass car and 400 would work better for you especially if your thinking of filling the trunk with batteries  !

if you have a big block then get a 400.

if you have a small block then get a 350

You said that you are looking for horsepower and to my knowlege the 400 is better for torque.

sounds cool, thanks for the pointers,i will most likely go with the 400 trans after i wear out my 350 trans.
from what i hear it sounds like the right way to go, but again the 350 with a shift kit sounds cool, but i would have to re do my rear end before i go that route.

i'll run the 350 till it goes out.
