i use to do it after but it keeps falling off. now i do it before i clear it, but it doesnt shine as much?

yeah, thats why i say do it before because i know it will dull it when you clear.
do like me and get you a roll of the chrome tape from home depot

i've heard of doing it before painting even. You take some thinner and wipe away the paint where you want the bare metal to show through
