It sounds like your warning lamp circuit is being shorted to 12V while the key is off. It is suppose to be on switched ignition through the warning lamp. Basically, there's 12V going to the warning lamp then it goes to the alternator and the circuit gets completed through the alternator. When the alternator begins charging, there's 12V on that pin and therefore there is a 0V drop across the warning lamp, which turns if off. Since you are having a continous 12V drop across the lamp, it stays on all the time. This is why the alternator is getting hot, because it is completing the circuit all the time. You need to trace your wires BEFORE the warning lamp and find out why it isn't turning off when the key is off.
