in car we do..we do a subframe that supports the battery rack and pumprack.. the subframe is sually 1/2 thick by 4 inch wide box tubing... then the battery rack itself is 1x1 angle iron... pumps can be placed on angle iron or square tubing... also u need to add metal to the middle of ur subrame to keep it from bending...

i left the picture large so u can see it really easily...
the red is my 2 subframes..the blue is the linking metal to connect the two frames to keep them from twisting and the green is the 1x1 battery rack... as far as the battery rack goes u measure the length and width of ur battery in whatever configuration u have them set in and thats how u make the rack...

always attach your battery and pump frame to the chassis. never attach to the body. the metal WILL fail.

Call some scrap yards, they usually have pieces that are cut or have a little surface rust for decent prices. I usually buy all mine from a metal supplier though so i know its clean and its not as expensive if you buy in 20' lengths.

What's the best place to find angle and such, without having to go to a supplier?
I got all my angle iron at Menard's, they also had threaded rod, coupling nuts, and solid bars i used for my battery hold down's. Only thing i have to go to a metal supplier for is box tubing. Just for example, both my battery trays were built out of two pieces of 6ft x 1 1/2" x 1/8" angle iron and it was about $6 each piece.

Here's my rack, i spent a little under $70 including battery hold downs, washers, nuts, etc..

What are the subframe/frame attached to the body or the chassis?

toss up some more pics.  Search sucks
the sub rack is welded on top of the frame rails...and theres 2 seperate sections going from drive side to passender side of the frame then cross braces welded to them...
