the length really doesn't matter. i extended mine out 8 inches and i can fully lock up but yes it will affect the drop a little bit. when i drop mine all the way down the leafs sit completely flat. here are a couple of pics with it fully locked and completely dropped.

what size cylinder r u runnin
and what if u drop it so the leaf is flexing the opposite way do u think it would snap

10's and yeah they will snap if you reverse them.
