Hi,
my buddy got a 89 ford escort and it was running fine till yesterday(he got it last week)
After driving for an hour in hot weather, the car could barely make it up the hills. When he floors it, it doesnt shift down and car almost stalls.

then we park the car and let it cool for several hours. come back to it and it runs fine again..but after driving for a while, happens again.

The car has EFI.

any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

it will still show codes. When that check engine light comes on something has failed and or is totally damaged/disconnected.

your buddy needs to stay away from 4 letter words.
you can take the radiator cap off and start the car with the cap off, let it warm up, and see if the antifreeze is flowing. a thermostat is good to replace every now and then, its cheap and fairly easy. also while you change that id flush the radiator.
the catalytic converter could be stopping up or something, the scanner wont see that and youll change everything, spend enough money triing to fix it that you could buy a g body and be happy. anyway if it gets stopped up or something, it wont let the engine breathe properly, and that wont let the engine run right.
my buddy was having a problem with his car, spent close to $1000 triing to fix it, changeing sensors, fuel pump ect., took it to the chevy dealer, they couldnt find anything out. it ended up being the TPS. take it to a shop and get it scanned first befre you start changeing parts.

CATALYLITIC CONVERTER stopping up , or FUEL PUMP losing pressure when hot
I put my money on this here[/b][/quote]
If it's the cat, then just gut it out.

Or just give the car away to a charity for a tax benefit.

ok info for all, the easiest way to check for a stopped up cat is to have someone rev the engine and you listen to the exhaust tone if it just sounds like a blowing noise then the cat is more than likely stopped up if you hear a good tone and feel pulses of exhaust waves then the cat is ok
