i was just messing around with some flakes today, i was useing a cheap 1.8 primer [email protected] then 30psi, most of the flake ended up on the ground, what was the problem? gun distance, air pressure? i tried 10" and up close, nothing seemed to help

OK this sounds wierd......

First some questions.

What were you shooting them on? and how was it preped.

Also what did you mix you'r flake into......intercoat or normal clear?

and how did you mix it?

What kind of flake are you using?
like i said i was just messing around, normal prep on a old fender, i had a 1/2 quart of hok candy so i just mixed 1oz of osf .040 chrome flake into it just so i could see how the flake would lay down, but 75% of the flakes ended up on the ground, the candy cover well, it was just the flakes that didnt do so hott
Well an oz of flake for only 1/2 quart of liquid is allot of flake......and that may have somthing to do with it, but then again you did say that the candy laid down nice so :dunno:

Also, I'm not a fan of OSF.......it's a heavy flake, it settles in you gun faster, and doesn't lay well........if you have some, try some HOK mini flake....You'r going to love the defrence
i have a shit load of hok flake on the shelf, i will give that a shot later, it kinda sucks cuz i waz set on useing jumbo flakes, but hok doesnt make any outrages sized flake like osf, i have a big jar of the 40 and a huge jar of the 64, oh well, im thinking about scaping all the stuff i have thus far and just going and getting some reagular candy radianceII green, if so i have 6 quarts of sick candy lime gold up for grabs
You will get some flake on the floor no matter what,I know i'm still sweeping up little flacks now and then from my last flake job(which was 4 months ago)!
The bigger the flake, the bigger the mess.
Ya, but 75% on the ground :dunno:

Flake will overspray just like anything els............but there is no reason for so much of it not sticking to you'r work
oh well, i am gonig to get a bc/cc match and say forget the flake, keep a look out in the classifieds for candy lime gold and osf/hok flakes
Jon Kosmoski told me in person that you should spray a medium wet coat of clear down first & then spray flakes ( For alot of larger & heavier flake jobs !!!).... This way the flake will imbed into the clearcoat instead of bouncing off of the base...

Another thing might be that your flake to clear ratio was too high .... But, I have mixed flaked real thick & sprayed with results...

You might need to increase your fluid out put from your gun because it could be that your not allowing enuff out to bind with the base ......

My openion is house of kolor flakes..........but I've only used HOK and OSF.......and I wasn't impressed at all with OSF's quality :( .....though they may have improved by now :dunno:

I've also heard the SEM, Xotic, Allsa and PPG as well as other main stream paint makers also offer there own flake.......I just havn't used those yet.......

It will be nice to hear other paoples openions on these or other name brand flake
