I was driving along after putting some gas in my '84 v6 Monte Carlo, & the gauge went all the way past full, way past it.

It was working fine before & even after I put about a half a tank of gas in it.
I was welding in the trunk earlier today, but it was reading correct after that.
The road i was on when I noticed it was a little bumpy, & it was raining.

What would make the gauge to max out, an open circuit, or a completely closed circuit with no resistance? Where should I start, the sending unit & wiring around it, or the gauge? Whatchathink
