Hey Guys,

Now that I buy fittings sight unseen I need to know what type of threads/fittings I need to ask for.

There are four types most used,

1) The first is pipe threads, is there another name for this type of thread?

2) Then there are the fittings for the hose ends. We used to call these tube to tube. They have a flare. What is the correct name for this type of fitting/thread?

3) Then there is the type of fitting that uses an o-ring to make the seal. What's the name for these type?

4) The last one is the type of fitting that has a lock nut on a threaded shaft, with part of the threads missing in the center. You slide an o-ring over the threads and then tighten down the lock nut. What is the correct name for this type?

As always, thanks for the help.

1. NPTF .................like a 3/8 male check

2. Hose fittings....commonly caled "swage fittings", can be BSP, metric, SAE or any thread form but usually JIC in lowrider use. This is a male JIC fitting [to show you the shape of JIC] and a swage fitting

3. Not sure which you mean by this but there is an American automotive SAE form that uses o ring an clamp

4. This can be BSP,metric or SAE....it is called an "adjustable" because it allows you to point the fitting in the direction you need. The female half this fitting goes in will always have a recess or chamfer [like where a dump stick screws into]

Hey Thanks again for all the help. Air280 nice PICs, your post saved me from buying the wrong kind.

Dumps, I'll check out that link.

I got an old book somewhere, just need to find it.
