I just picked up 64 Impala SS with a 350 in it, i wanted to know how do i find out if it originally came with a 327 or a 283 engine. I checked the VIN number and body tag with no luck, just came up as a SS V8 2dr sports coupe. Any help would be appreciated.....Marxx

back in 64' the SS was just a trim option and was available with 6 cyl. , 283 , 327, & 409. Check your fuel line and see what size it is. You can also check to see which way it's routed by the upper a-arm. One comes up over the frame then goes under the upper a-arm. The other just runs down the inner side of frame. Also if it's still the original fender emblems, if they are V's then it was a 283. If it has V w/flags it was a 327. A 6cyl. will have a 6 on the emblem and 409"s had the V flags along with the # 409 above the flags. ;)

Now that is news, I have to go to my Owners manuel on that one, cause even my repair manuel only shows 327, and 409

No problem! Looks like you have yourself a 327. Now the question is which one? The 250hp or the 300hp? These were determined by the size of your fuel line.

yea, check your fuel lines. the 327's and 409's had i believe the 3/8" fuel lines and the 283 had the smaller ones, 5/16" i think...measure them.
