line drivers?

i keep seeing all these line drivers for sale, my brother in law bought one cuz the guy at the local shop said it would help him get rid of some alternator whine. i think it's bullshit, if anything it should make the whine worse, by theory at least. hes changed the grounds, he's using the same ground for the subs and mids/highs, 2 different amps, but he's only picking up the alternator whine on the high end. only other thing i could think of is that the shop thats recommending the line driver installed his shit, they ran the rca's,remote and power altogether. i think thats where the whine is coming from just from a past experience. any other suggestions?

another thing, when you run a line driver, like the one he bought it says 8v rms, does that add to the existing voltage or is that the flat output like an amplifier? for example, i have 5v preouts on my hu, if i used an 8v line driver, would i have 13v or 8v? i been trying to read up on benefits of line drivers and i cant really find any unless you have a shitty head unit with low voltage rca's, if anyone has any links to information about line drivers i'd love to read up on them. thanks in advance.

it ups the voltage to the stated voltage, for example, 8vrms = 8v , not 11 if your hu is 3v.

Not it doesnt necessirly help any, only time it helps is if your amp can take a high preout voltage, and your HU is cheap or has less than a 3v output.

That is the only use. Noob's think it makes your amp have "more bass" when actually you are sending unsafe levels of voltage into your pre-amp section of the board... bad bad bad
With a 5v h/u you do NOT need one...

The only reason you would need one is if you bought newer amps that REQUIRED 8v balanced input line voltage...
Yes dont be fooled into the "It makes more bass" sales gimmick, noob's try it all the time locally.
LINE DRIVERS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH BASS. I LIKE THEM BECAUSE IT BUMPS UP YOUR VOLTAGE, AND ALLOWS YOU TO TURN DOWN THE GAINS ON YOUR AMPS, WHICH IN TURNS GIVE YOU A BETTER S/N RATIO, BASICALLY JUST MORE HEADROOM. ONLY REASON I USE THEM
i figured as much, and i doubt it will solve his problem with the alternator whine either, if you amplify a shitty signal, its still a shitty signal.
also may be of good use if your daisy chaining your signal from one amp to the next. for intance if you were running 6 subs and six amps
I used one and liked it at first it ws on a cheap sony deck and a opunch 400 and made a big difrence in volume .... then I hooked it up on a pioneer premeir deck and a newer kicker amp and it didnt do a whole lot for volume but it made a big difrence in overall sql

I went looking for a new one yesterday but node of the shops had them in stock

the one I had before was a pro acoustic line driver with crossover and remote bass I payed $40 for it ..

I want another one because my alpine deck puts out like 3.5v (I think max) and my amp is setup to take 6v rms so I have my gains cranked up and some song it doesnt sound as good as i'd like
