is plywood better than mdf if they were the same thickness?
MDF is 100 times better than standard plywood.

The only plywood worth using is marine grade or birch, which runs anywhere from 2-3x as much. So, you're better of sticking with MDF.

The main reason for Medium Density is that the natural frequenc of the wood is in a desireable range. Plywood of the same thickness isnt assembled with the same glue and tends to be less dense.

In car audio, a box isnt just a box to hold speakers, it is a versatile tool to tune your speakers. Always stick with atleast 3/4" MDF for subs, even double layered for large subs.
