i plan on yanking out my sb 400. its in my 65 impala how long should this take, any tips or is it pretty staight foward un bolt everything and pull it, this is my first time pulling out a v8

I like to pull out the motor and tranny together. :biggrin: Easier.

You can use a lift plate like this on the intake. :biggrin: Its just a matter of manuevering the engine and tranny and getting the right angle.

when i got my 305 pulled out we had (dont know what this is calle) some bar which can twist to angle the motor. it also has a chain. i bolted the chain on each corner of the intake and with the engine hoist voila :0

i like to separate the motor and tranny, and just pull the engine. if you have an automatic, just remember to unbolt the torque converter! a lift plate makes life easier, and a leveler makes it perfect.

you can remove the exhaust manifolds from the heads, or remove the exhaust at the collectors- your choice.

otherwise, it is as simple as it looks. if i am not mistaken, your 400 should be a small block, so there is plenty of wiggle room in the engine bay. you can take off some of the ancillary components (fan, ac compressor-if equipped, alternator), but it is not mandatory.

I know I cant tell because I just found out my 350 is really a 305.
