Removing Gold Plating?

2120 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  SWITCHCRAFT
A while back I purchased a 97 Black/Black Devile D'Elegance. I do not like the Gold/Crome combo. The Grill is perfect crome and I'm looking to get the emlems the same way. The gold trim currently includes the hood emblem, lower rocker molding, and upper rear mody moldings. What c type of angent/solvent can I use to remove the gold plating and return it to its base metal? Can this be down with the emblems on the car? Will it damage the paint? Thanks in advance

depending on how good it is plated, you should be able to use some chrome polish, and rub the gold off..
I know those stupid gold exhaust tips from autozone are that way..
G
laqcuer thinner, will take it off immediatly
You would probably be better off going to a junk yard, and finding some decent chrome emblems there....yours will look like shit once you get the gold off. You will end up with a very greyish, dull chrome...there will be almost no shine to it. Just my recommendation. You WILL be shitty when you see what one looks like, trust me.
i goldplate shit emblems and shit alot.........

southsidecomp is right once the gold is removed you WILL expose the nickel that lies underneath.........which is VERY dull...............and looks sorta grey..........

the only other way is if you knew how the car was gold plated..........

if they removed the chrome layer..........which would give you a more darker gold...........you are screwed........

if they did not and left the chrome..........you can use a chrome polish and "buff" or rub the gold off..................and you would then have the chrome underneath.........

so i guess i would try and rub it off first.........and see if the chrome is underneath...........

this will tell you if you want to get new emblems..............

you could also try to buff the nickel layer if you wanted.......(i would only do this if i was short on money) it looks ok but not as good as chrome...........

good luck
