how do you shorten it?

You need chain break tool, it removes those pins and replaces them also. Take out what you don't need and put it back together.
The guys at your local bike shop can sell you the tool , show you how , or I am sure they will do it for you for a samll fee.

And you gotta get one back in too! The right tools are the right tools. If its not done right your chain will bind up and shit or at very least make alot of noise.

'k - if ya don't want to spend money on tools - just grind down the "small pin" and get one of that things that they call "chain lock" (at least here in Germany). It looks like a part of the chain but you can open and close it easily.

I got one of them. It came with the chain. The chain is actually tooo long, just needed to shorten it.
