are you using the right end of the rod?
cause if you using the wrong end then it won't lock into place and turn.

you sure you using the right end, thats an easy ting to do, using the wrong end of the rod that is, i've done that b4....the wrong end won't go into the slot but feels like it did and feels like its stripped...happened to me the first time i took my spare down off my burban.....
