I wanted to paint my car myself next spring when I go to autobody school, but right now it's has a light to minimal surface rust. A couple of people have told me to prep, sand, prime it and then shoot it with regular black spraypaint to keep out the moister and to see any inperfections. I was planning to put the car up for the winter, but is this a good idea and how much trouble will this next year when I'm ready to paint?
Thank for any advice in advance :)

This is the best way to do it if you have the money.

That'll keep it from rustin anymore this year... You can sand it right the fuc off when your ready to re-prep and spray.
