i found it out thanks but its not any f body this is wat iv learned maybe it will help someone else
Yeah, I probably should know more about columns than I do. I did a near complete rebuild of one for my car (also an '89), and some modifications to it as well. But, unfortunately because I was so focused on just getting it taken care of I failed to notice what car I got my replacement out of and what all was different...

Anyway, here's what I got for you. Here's a link to a reply that pretty much answers your question, and confirms my understanding of the '89 column. So there you have it, 'the only direct replacement is an '89 column (I would assume Firebird would work too, but the multifunction lever might be different).'

It is possible to use earlier or later columns, but modifications will have to be made. For earlier columns '85-'88 the ignition cylinder housing will have to be modified to accept the larger VATS cylinder from your '89. Not really an easy mod, but it's what I ended up doing...

The later columns, '90-'92, are set up for airbag steering wheels. I think there might be a difference in the ignition cylinder housing where it meets the back of the steering wheel, like it extends out more or something... (This tells what I am talking about, start @ reply #5. And, this tells another way someone dealt with the rubbing.) However, if you were just going to use the airbag wheel then it would be a non-issue. Also, there's this thread that says there might be some difference in the wiper control connector...

With all that said, I would say the easiest, most straight forward, and foolproof choice would be an '89 column with all the same cruise and wiper options as your car. But, a '90-'92 column would be second best. And, a '85-'88 column would be most difficult and should probably be avoided.

Anyway, sorry for the long winded response. I hope some of it is helpful. Good luck!
