Don't cut the lip. You need to get the lip rolled under and flattened out. If you just cut it the outer lip will distort and it looks like shit. I learned this the hard way.

we cut most of the inner lip on my 67 pontiac and it doesn't look any different...maybe its thicker metal though

Totally different car man. I think it has to do with the curves in the quarter panel on the "bubble" Chevys, it seems to be kind of spring loaded. Thats about the best I can describe it.
